Access to court 15.05.2025

Visit by court-appointed defence counsel

On 15.05.2025 between 14:30 and 15:30 I was visited by my long-absent court-appointed defence counsel, R., whom I had not seen for several months.

During our conversation I told him that, although I respected him as a lawyer, because of recent events I had no longer trusted him from September 2024 to the present day. I stated clearly that I insisted on his discharge from his court appointment.

Commentary — Dmitry Bagrash’s assessment

The visit was the first personal contact with court-appointed defence counsel in months and took place when the appeal on points of law deadlines had long expired. Court-appointed defence counsel who becomes reachable after the time limits have passed no longer performs the function envisaged by § 140 StPO: the appointment formally remains in place while also blocking my own access to the court.
